About Dr Taiwo Akindipe
Dr Taiwo Akindipe is a psychiatrist with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field. He graduated as a medical doctor and completed the Fellowship in Psychiatry from West Africa. He joined Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, in 2009 where he received sub-specialist training in Addiction Psychiatry. Meanwhile, he obtained an MPhil in Addictions from the University of Cape Town in the same year.
Teaching, Research, and Capacity Building
He was the Chief Psychiatrist and Head of Department at Sefako Magkatho Health Sciences University (SMU) and at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, Pretoria. He these positions until September 2022, when he resigned to start his private practice. He has taught generations of medical students and postgraduate psychiatry registrars within and outside of South Africa.
He is well-published in peer-reviewed scientific journals on various topics surrounding psychiatry and addiction. During his tenure at SMU, he supervised postgraduate psychiatry dissertations. Today he continues to provide editorial support to various psychiatric journals.
Community Engagement
Previously, he rendered voluntary psychiatry services to Kensington Treatment Centre, Cape Town and Population Council (an NGO in Lagos). Furthermore, he was the focal person for a drug unit and part of the Expert Committee on National Minimum Standards for Drug Dependence Treatment in Nigeria (UNODC Project – FED/2012/306-744).
He is also a Non-Alcoholic trustee for Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He supports mental health initiatives through his membership in the following learned societies:
- South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP)
- South African Addiction Medicine Society (SAAMS)
- International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP)
- Suicide Research and Prevention Initiative (SURPIN)
- Global Experts Network of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM-GEN)
